A new home share program has opened in Calgary, Alberta. As the news show says, “It’s such a good idea, why didn’t someone think of it before?” Well, many people have. There are home share programs world-wide.
The truth is that many home share programs struggle. They struggle to maintain funding. Equally important they struggle to develop enough clients who are interested in home sharing. It takes a critical mass of people wanting to share their houses with people wanting to trade services for housing so that there are enough people to make good matches. Maybe my book, “Sharing Housing: A Guidebook for Finding and Keeping Housemates” (soon to be published) will help people see sharing housing as a viable option for them.
