Thought for the day:

The ability to live alone only becomes possible when electricity, running water and central heating allow an individual to maintain a life without using muscles – their own or hired. It is decidedly a late-twentieth century phenomenon. The first census that asked about the size of households was in 1940. At the time 7.7 percent lived alone. In 2010, 26 percent of households were single occupancy.

It may be modern but it’s not sustainable, is it?
