What if we room with someone who we discover has mental illness

I would like to know how to politely ask someone if they have a mental
illness when I interview them to live with me. I also would like to
know what to do if I think they may have a mental illness when they
already live with me. I know there is a range of mental illness, some
easier to live with and some harder. I just need to know my options if
it comes up.

Thank you for creating this marvelous blog!

Perhaps there isn’t a polite way to do this at all. I’ve been thinking about your question. I think that there is a huge range of behavior in the category of “mental illness.” Manic? Suicidal? Eating disorder? Depression? I need to write more about the assessment process because this is finding out about the other person. I think that if you know that you don’t want to live with someone with a mental illness, then you have to say that. It’s all part of the making sure you are clear about what you want and say so. What specifically is the behavior in a house mate that you don’t want to have?

Is that helpful?
