Perhaps there isn't a polite way to do this at all. I've been thinking about your question. I think that there is a huge range of behavior in the category of "mental illness." Manic? Suicidal? Eating disorder? Depression? I need to write more about the assessment process because this is finding out about the other person. I think that if you know that you don't want to live with someone with a mental illness, then you have to say that. It's all part of the making sure you are clear about what you want and say so. What specifically is the behavior in a house mate that you don't want to have?

Is that helpful?
